Wied's Tyrant-Manakin

Wied's Tyrant-Manakin, scientifically known as Neopelma aurifrons, is a member of the Pipridae family endemic to the Atlantic Forest regions of eastern Brazil. It was first described by the German naturalist Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied in the early 19th century during his influential expedition to Brazil between 1815 and 1817. The bird is characterized by its inconspicuous olive-green plumage and a distinct, often hidden, yellow crown patch, which typically remains concealed unless the bird is in a state of display.

The species is taxonomically recognized for its distinct physical adaptations, including rounded wings and a rounded tail, which are typical for understory dwellers that favor maneuverability over long-distance flight. Its design—an evolutionary result of its habitat in the dense forest undergrowth—serves to facilitate short, rapid movements between shrubs and low branches. It remains a subject of significant interest for ornithologists studying avian distribution and the effects of habitat fragmentation within the threatened Brazilian Atlantic Forest ecosystem.
