Golden-winged Manakin

The Golden-winged Manakin, scientifically identified as Masius chrysopterus, is a small passerine bird native to the humid forests of the Andes. First described by the French naturalist Frédéric de Lafresnaye in 1843, the species emerged from a period of intense ornithological exploration in South America during the 19th century. Its taxonomy was established as scientists sought to categorize the vast diversity of the Manakin family, characterized by their unique lekking behaviors and complex courtship displays.

The design of the Golden-winged Manakin—particularly the male's distinct black plumage contrasted with vibrant yellow wing patches and an unusual, specialized crest—is a striking example of evolutionary ornamentation. The species’ rounded wings and characteristically pointed, stiffened tail feathers are structural adaptations that facilitate rapid, agile flight during their high-energy displays.
