The Xinjiang ground-jay, or Biddulph's ground-jay, was first described by the ornithologist Allan Octavian Hume in 1874. It is a highly specialized species endemic to the harsh, hyper-arid deserts of the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, China. Its evolutionary trajectory is marked by distinct adaptations to the shifting sands, leading to its characteristic broad wings and rounded tail, which facilitate short, fluttery flights across the dunes rather than long-distance migration.
