Yellow-billed Tern

The yellow-billed tern, Sternula superciliaris, is a species native to the river systems of South America, primarily inhabiting the basins of the Amazon, Orinoco, and Río de la Plata. It was formally described by French ornithologist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1819, based on specimens collected during his extensive surveys of South American avian life. As a small member of the Sternidae family, its evolutionary adaptation to freshwater environments—rather than the coastal habitats common to many of its relatives—reflects a distinct specialization in riverine foraging.

The bird is characterized by its slender, pointed wings and a distinctively forked tail, physical traits that facilitate high-speed, maneuverable flight necessary for plunge-diving into river currents. Its name derives from its most striking field mark: a vibrant, unblemished yellow bill. Ornithologists and birders generally recognize it as a quintessential indicator species for the health of major South American riverine ecosystems, as it relies heavily on exposed sandbars and islands for nesting, which remain vulnerable to changing water levels and human development.
