Belcher's Gull

The Belcher's gull, or Larus belcheri, was scientifically described in the mid-19th century and named in honor of the British naval officer and explorer Sir Edward Belcher. Native to the Pacific coast of South America, specifically ranging from Peru to Chile, the species was historically identified during the various hydrographic surveys and natural history expeditions that characterized the era of maritime exploration along the Andean coastline.

The species is distinguished by its characteristic broad wing shape and square tail, physical traits that have been documented by ornithologists as adaptations for its niche as a specialized coastal scavenger and kleptoparasite. While it does not have a single designer in the human sense, the bird’s aesthetic and biological presentation has been the subject of detailed lithographic illustrations in foundational 19th-century zoological volumes, where naturalists sought to capture its distinct plumage patterns and the diagnostic black band across its tail.
