Yellow-spectacled Heleia

The Yellow-spectacled Heleia, scientifically known as Heleia wallacei, is a small passerine bird endemic to the islands of Sumbawa and Flores in Indonesia. First described in the 19th century, the species is named after the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, whose exploration of the Malay Archipelago significantly contributed to the development of evolutionary theory. It belongs to the Zosteropidae family and thrives in the canopy of montane forests, where its distinctive yellow eye-ring serves as a primary field identification mark.

The species is distinguished by its rounded wings and rounded tail, physical adaptations suited for the maneuverable, short-distance flights required to navigate dense forest foliage. Its evolutionary lineage reflects the unique biodiversity of the Wallacea region, a transition zone between Asian and Australian faunal realms. While not the subject of individual human design, its morphology is the result of long-term natural selection within island ecosystems, and it remains a subject of intense interest for ornithologists studying insular speciation.
