Where it came from
An Evening of Murder is a quintessential example of the dinner party mystery game genre that gained significant popularity during the 1980s. Designed to be played in a home setting, these kits provided participants with character scripts, clues, and rules to facilitate an immersive role-playing experience over the course of a meal. The game was crafted to tap into the enduring cultural fascination with classic whodunit tropes, drawing clear inspiration from the works of authors like Agatha Christie.
The physical components, including invitations and character booklets, were designed to create a sense of theatricality and period atmosphere for the players. As a product of its time, it prioritized social interaction and low-stakes performance over complex mechanics. It received positive attention from lifestyle and hobbyist publications of the era for successfully translating the tension of a detective novel into a accessible, collaborative format that encouraged players to engage with their hosts and guests in character.
