Where it came from
Ark Nova was designed by Mathias Wigge and released in 2021 by Lautapelit.fi. The game emerged during a period of rising interest in medium-to-heavy strategy games that emphasize engine building and long-term planning. It was conceived as a thematic simulation where players manage a modern zoo, balancing the scientific goals of conservation with the commercial necessity of attracting visitors, effectively blending complex resource management mechanics with environmental stewardship themes.
The visual design features contributions from several artists, including Loïc Billiau, Dennis Lohausen, Steffen Bieker, and Christof Tisch, who aimed to provide a functional yet immersive aesthetic that accommodates a high volume of iconography. Upon its release, the game was received as a significant addition to the hobbyist market, garnering widespread critical acclaim for its depth and strategic variety, and it quickly established itself as a staple among enthusiasts of complex Euro-style board games.
