Where it came from
Bashni, often referred to as Tower or Towers, is a traditional Russian folk game that belongs to the broader family of stacking or draughts-based board games. Historically, it emerged as a variation of standard draughts, designed to introduce a vertical dimension to the board. By allowing pieces to be stacked into towers, the game shifts the strategic focus from simple captures to the tactical management of mobility and position within a three-dimensional space.
The design of the game is rooted in folk craftsmanship, typically utilizing simple wooden checkers that can be easily interlocked. Its aesthetic reflects a utilitarian approach to play, focusing on tactile feedback and clear movement rules. While the game was originally part of Russian village culture, it has been studied by mathematicians and game theorists interested in the complex dynamics of stack-based movement, and it remains a popular subject among enthusiasts of historical abstract strategy games.
