Brazilian draughts, or damas, evolved as a regional variant of international draughts played on a 64-square board rather than the 100-square grid standard in Europe. It emerged as a popular pastime in Brazil during the twentieth century, formalizing rules that closely mirror international draughts while adapting the playing surface to the more ubiquitous 8x8 checkerboard. The game is characterized by the long-range capture capability of kings, which makes it faster and more tactical than the standard English checkers played in North America.
