Where it came from
Chupu is a traditional folk game of the Mapuche people of Chile and Argentina, characterized by its reliance on a small, hand-carved wooden ball. Historically, the game served as a social focal point within Mapuche communities, often played during gatherings to foster agility and communal interaction. It is deeply embedded in the cultural identity of the region, reflecting a long-standing tradition of physical play that predates modern organized sports.
The design of the Chupu ball is purposefully minimalist, emphasizing function over elaborate ornamentation. Craftsmen typically select local hardwoods to ensure the object can withstand repeated impact during play. The game's enduring nature is a testament to its simplicity; it was designed to be easily portable and produced with basic tools, ensuring it remained accessible across generations of practitioners who sought to preserve their cultural heritage through active sport.
