Where it came from
Daldøs is a traditional race game originating from the coastal regions of Scandinavia, particularly associated with the maritime culture of Denmark. Historically played by sailors and fishing communities, it is categorized as a cross and circle game, sharing structural similarities with ancient games like Patolli or Pachisi. Its origins are linked to the Viking era, though it persisted as a common pastime in rural Danish households well into the 20th century.
The board is typically a circular wooden disc featuring a track for moving pieces, often played with a uniquely carved long-die called a 'daldøs' or 'dal'. The design reflects a pragmatic aesthetic, intended for portable play during long voyages or quiet evenings. While it largely faded from public consciousness by the mid-1900s, it has seen a modest revival among board game historians and ethnographers interested in preserving regional folk traditions.
