English draughts

English draughts, known as checkers in North America, evolved from earlier board games such as alquerque and chess. By the 16th century, the game had been standardized in its current form in southern France and England, shifting from the use of a modified chess board to the standard eight-by-eight grid. It gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as a game of skill, leading to the formation of professional associations and the publication of extensive analytical strategy books.

The design of the standard draughts set—typically featuring twelve circular pieces per player—was intended to prioritize accessibility and functional clarity. While luxury sets are often crafted from fine woods, stone, or ivory, the iconic red and black plastic or wooden discs have remained the industry standard for casual play. This minimalism has allowed the game to maintain its status as a timeless staple in both domestic settings and competitive gaming circles for hundreds of years.
