Free Parking originated as a central mechanic in the game Monopoly, which traces its lineage back to the 1903 Landlord's Game created by Elizabeth Magie. In the original iteration, the board featured spaces intended to educate players on economic justice, though the game evolved significantly before being commercialized by Parker Brothers in the 1930s.

The modern visual design of the Free Parking space, featuring the iconic yellow sedan, was established during the mid-20th century as the game became a staple of American leisure. While the official rules treat the space as a neutral area where no action occurs, it became the subject of widespread house rules—most notably the inclusion of a 'pot' of tax money—that altered the game's mathematical balance.
