Provenance

Where it came from

Hex was invented in 1942 by the Danish mathematician Piet Hein, who initially called the game Polygon, and independently by the mathematician John Nash in 1948 while he was a graduate student at Princeton University. The game is played on a rhombus-shaped board made of a hexagonal grid, where players compete to form an unbroken chain of their color between opposite sides of the board. Because it is a finite, perfect-information game with no possibility of a draw, it holds a significant place in the study of game theory and combinatorial topology.

Parker Brothers released their commercial version of the game under the name Hex in 1952. While the game was praised by academics for its elegance and mathematical depth, it struggled to gain widespread traction in the mass-market toy sector during that era. Its design is stripped down to its essential geometry, reflecting the intent to create a pure strategic challenge rather than a thematic experience, leading to its enduring status as a classic of abstract strategy gaming.
