International draughts, also known as Polish draughts, emerged in the early 18th century as an evolution of the standard 64-square game. Played on a 100-square board, the game was developed to increase the complexity and tactical depth of the traditional format by adding the long-range movement of the pieces and introducing the requirement to capture the maximum number of opponent pieces available. It gained significant popularity in France and the Netherlands, eventually becoming the standard for international competition.

The design of the 100-square board and the specific set of rules were finalized to facilitate high-level tournament play. Unlike its smaller predecessor, the international version emphasizes positional strategy and elaborate multi-capture sequences. It has remained a staple of mathematical and logical strategy communities for centuries, with its standardized aesthetics and board layout largely unchanged since the standardization of the international ruleset by the World Draughts Federation.
