Ouk chatrang, often referred to as Cambodian chess, is a traditional strategy game deeply embedded in Khmer culture. Its design and rules are closely related to the ancient Indian game of chaturanga, representing a regional evolution of the chess family that spread across Southeast Asia. The game is historically significant as a social pillar in Cambodian village life, traditionally played in public spaces, coffee shops, and during community gatherings as a centerpiece of leisure and intellectual exchange.

The pieces are typically hand-carved from wood, featuring distinct shapes that evoke the military units of the Khmer Empire, such as the 'neang' or queen and the 'toul' or chariot. Because these sets were historically crafted by local artisans rather than mass-produced, there is no single named designer for the traditional form.
