Pallanguzhi

Pallanguzhi is a traditional mancala-style board game that has been played for centuries across South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu. The game is played on a rectangular wooden board featuring fourteen cups, often arranged in two rows of seven, and uses small seashells, seeds, or stones as game pieces. Historically rooted in agrarian societies, the game was a common household pastime used to teach children basic arithmetic and strategy through the repetitive process of counting and distributing seeds into pits.

The design of the board evolved from simple indentations carved into the ground to portable, often ornate wooden boards carved from rosewood or teak. While the game does not have a single named designer, it is deeply embedded in the cultural heritage of the Tamil people, often associated with festive occasions like Pongal. Over time, the game was largely displaced by digital entertainment, though it has seen a modest resurgence as a tangible cultural artifact valued for its simplicity and historical significance.
