Where it came from
The push puppet, or 'cushion toy,' emerged in the early 20th century as a clever application of kinetic sculpture. Typically crafted from wood or plastic, the mechanism relies on a spring-loaded central column hidden inside a series of articulated segments. When the base is pressed, the internal tension is released, causing the figure to collapse into a heap before snapping back to its upright position the moment the pressure is removed.
While the specific origins of the push puppet are often associated with German folk toy traditions of the Erzgebirge region, they gained widespread commercial popularity in the mid-century era through toy manufacturers like Kohner Brothers. The design was celebrated for its simplicity and the tactile satisfaction it offered users. These figures were frequently styled as pop culture characters, animals, or jesters, serving as both a desktop novelty and a staple of children's playrooms for decades.
