Where it came from
Rats of Wistar was released in 2023 by CrowD Games, designed by the prolific duo Danilo Sabia and Simone Luciani. The game draws its thematic inspiration from the historical Wistar Institute experiments, casting players as rats who have escaped a laboratory and are now developing their own civilization. Its design leans heavily into the crunchy, engine-building Eurogame style that characterizes Luciani's body of work, focusing on resource management and strategic worker placement.
The game is notable for its intricate mechanical integration, featuring a rotating action wheel that dictates available choices and changes each round. Upon its release, it was received positively by the hobbyist community for its thematic depth and the challenge of balancing technological progress with the survival needs of the rat colony. The artwork and production quality were specifically praised for helping to ground the high-concept premise in a cohesive, table-ready experience.
