Where it came from
Savernake Forest was designed by Cristina Vásquez and published by 999 Games in 2023. The game draws inspiration from the real-world ancient forest in Wiltshire, England, translating the quiet, seasonal cycle of woodland life into a tactical card-drafting experience. Players act as forest creatures preparing for winter by collecting food cards to store in their hollows and dens, emphasizing a gentle, strategic approach to resource management.
The aesthetic of the game was crafted to evoke a charming, naturalist atmosphere, utilizing soft, inviting illustrations that highlight local flora and fauna. By focusing on accessibility and family-friendly mechanics, the design prioritizes clear iconography and intuitive gameplay loops. Upon its release, it was well-received by the board gaming community for its tranquil theme and the depth of planning required to maximize scoring patterns within the forest grid.
