Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game was launched by Fantasy Flight Games in 2012, emerging during a period of renewed interest in tactical tabletop gaming. The game was designed to replicate cinematic space combat using pre-painted plastic miniatures at a 1:270 scale, allowing players to recreate iconic dogfights from the original trilogy and subsequent entries in the Star Wars canon. Its mechanics center on a secret movement dial system, which requires players to predict their opponent's maneuvers before executing flight paths.

The visual design and component quality were overseen by an internal development team at Fantasy Flight Games, led by James Kniffen. By focusing on highly detailed, ready-to-play models, the designers aimed to lower the barrier to entry for hobbyists who were often intimidated by the assembly and painting requirements of traditional wargaming. The game received widespread acclaim upon its release, particularly for its accessible yet deep rule set, and it quickly became a staple of the organized play circuit.
