The Plot to Assassinate Hitler

The Plot to Assassinate Hitler was published in 1976 by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) as part of their 'Power Politics' game series. The game was designed by Jim Dunnigan, a pivotal figure in the wargaming hobby who sought to create accessible, academically grounded simulations of historical and political crises. Released during a period when SPI was aggressively expanding the scope of board gaming beyond traditional military conflicts, it offered players a tactical look at the internal conspiracies against the Nazi regime.

The game design prioritizes the tense, clandestine nature of the 1944 July 20 plot, challenging players to balance the risks of assassination attempts against the danger of discovery by the Gestapo. While it received modest attention upon release, it remains a notable example of the era's experimental approach to historical modeling, reflecting SPI's commitment to transforming complex historical narratives into interactive strategic experiences that favored historical accuracy and structural mechanics over conventional victory conditions.
