These pieces were often masterworks of cabinetmaking, frequently crafted from exotic woods with elaborate marquetry and gilt-bronze mounts, reflecting the period's obsession with combining functional leisure with opulent interior design.

The game itself is a complex variant of backgammon, characterized by precise scoring rules that demand a sophisticated knowledge of arithmetic and strategy. Because the board design was so specific, it often served as a centerpiece in the salons of the Enlightenment, where players would engage in matches that could last for hours. The aesthetic design evolved under master ébénistes who aimed to marry the rigid geometric requirements of the board with the flowing, curvilinear lines of the Rococo and Neoclassical styles, resulting in furniture that was as much a sculptural statement as it was a tool for social recreation.
