A Season in Dornoch

A Season in Dornoch was written by veteran golf journalist Lorne Rubenstein during a period when the sport was experiencing a surge in international visibility. Published in 2001, the book documents Rubenstein's time spent living in the historic Scottish town of Dornoch, home to the Royal Dornoch Golf Club. The work was conceived as both a travelogue and a deep dive into the soul of links golf, capturing the rhythms of a remote community centered around one of the world's most revered courses.

The book is regarded for its atmospheric prose, which eschews the technical instructional focus common in golf literature in favor of a reflective, observational style. Rubenstein, who had covered the sport for decades for publications like The Globe and Mail, aimed to contextualize the game's origins within the Scottish landscape. Upon its release, it was well-received by critics and golf enthusiasts for its meditative quality and its ability to articulate the unique connection between the Scottish people and their golfing heritage.
