Where it came from
Published in 2015 by Creston Books, this picture book biography introduces young readers to the life and work of Ada Lovelace, the 19th-century mathematician often credited with writing the first computer algorithm. Laurie Wallmark authored the text to illuminate Lovelace's role in the development of Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, framing her story within the context of early computing history and the challenges faced by women in science during the Victorian era.
The book features illustrations by April Chu, whose visual approach uses a detailed, period-appropriate aesthetic to complement the narrative. Upon its release, the work was noted by educational organizations and reviewers for its success in making complex historical and technical themes accessible to a younger audience. It has been frequently cited in school curriculums and STEM outreach programs as a foundational text for introducing children to the history of computer programming.
