Where it came from
Published in 2015 by Bloomsbury Academic, this volume is part of the 'Film Stars' series, which seeks to critically examine the intersection of celebrity, performance, and cultural iconography. Written by Nick Rees-Roberts, a scholar specializing in French cinema and cultural studies, the book serves as a scholarly investigation into the career and public persona of Alain Delon, arguably the quintessential face of French film noir and the 'cool' aesthetic of the 1960s.
The design and analytical focus of the book prioritize an academic lens, moving away from traditional biography toward a study of how Delon’s physical image and performance style shaped the evolution of modern masculinity in cinema. Rees-Roberts explores how Delon’s collaborations with directors like Jean-Pierre Melville and Luchino Visconti allowed him to embody a paradoxical figure: the beautiful but lethal outsider. The work is widely regarded in film studies as a key text for understanding how stardom is constructed, maintained, and eventually mythologized.
