Alfonso Reyes

This volume is part of the extensive editorial legacy of Fondo de Cultura Económica, a storied Mexican publishing house established in 1934 to promote intellectual development in Spanish-speaking countries. Published in 1989, this edition serves as a curated retrospective or entry in the house's ongoing commitment to preserving the work of Alfonso Reyes, who is widely considered one of the most influential Mexican men of letters of the twentieth century.

Alfonso Reyes was a polymathic writer, diplomat, and philosopher whose work spanned poetry, literary criticism, and essays. The design and inclusion of his writings in FCE collections reflect a mid-century academic aesthetic that prioritizes readability and scholarly rigor. These publications were received as essential components of the Latin American literary canon, solidifying Reyes’s status as a foundational intellectual figure whose versatile style helped bridge classical traditions with modern Mexican thought.
