All the Best Card Games

Published by B.T. Batsford in 1979, All the Best Card Games was written by David Parlett, a renowned authority on card game history and mechanics. Emerging during a period when parlor and card games remained a staple of domestic social life, the book was conceived as a comprehensive guide to provide clear, accessible rules for both traditional classics and lesser-known variants. It reflects Parlett’s signature approach of prioritizing internal logic and playability while documenting the evolution of games that had previously lacked standardized instructions.

David Parlett, a professional game designer and author, drew upon his deep archival knowledge to curate this collection. His design intent was to strip away regional ambiguities in card rules, offering readers a precise reference for recreational play. The book was well-received by hobbyists and critics alike for its structured, authoritative tone and its ability to demystify complex games, solidifying Parlett’s reputation as one of the definitive chroniclers of card gaming history.
