Where it came from
This volume, published by Electa in 1996, serves as a scholarly monograph dedicated to the work of the Jesuit lay brother and architect Andrea Pozzo. Pozzo is primarily celebrated for his virtuoso command of perspective, most famously demonstrated in the illusionistic ceiling frescoes of the Sant'Ignazio Church in Rome. The book documents his profound influence on Baroque art, examining how his technical treatises provided the mathematical and aesthetic framework for the period's architectural trompe l'oeil.
The publication functions as a critical assessment of Pozzo's enduring legacy in architectural theory. By synthesizing his practical contributions to ecclesiastical decoration with his theoretical writings, the curators of this Electa edition sought to bridge the gap between his role as an artist and his reputation as a master of perspectival geometry. It is regarded by art historians as an essential reference for understanding the intersection of religious fervor and optical science in the late 17th century.
