Where it came from
The works of Andreas de Sancto Victore, a twelfth-century canon regular at the Abbey of Saint Victor in Paris, represent a critical contribution to medieval biblical exegesis. Known for his preference for Hebraica veritas, or the literal truth of the Hebrew text, Andreas sought to reconcile traditional Christian theology with the linguistic insights of Jewish scholars of his time, a departure from the purely allegorical approach favored by many of his contemporaries.
This specific edition, published by Brepols in 1991, is part of the authoritative Corpus Christianorum series. It was curated for modern scholars to provide a rigorous, critical reconstruction of these Latin texts, which had long been dispersed across various manuscripts. The volume stands as a standard reference for medievalists, valued for its meticulous scholarly apparatus and its role in preserving the intellectual legacy of the Victorine school of theology.
