Another Country

Another Country, published in 2014, serves as a poignant photographic survey of post-apartheid South Africa. Reiner Leist, a German-born photographer who moved to Johannesburg in the early 1990s, aimed to document the profound social and physical transformations of the nation as it transitioned into a multiracial democracy. Through his lens, Leist captures the lingering echoes of segregation alongside the hopeful emergence of a new national identity, presenting a nuanced visual narrative of a country navigating its complex historical inheritance.

The book is notable for its deliberate, contemplative aesthetic, moving away from traditional photojournalism to offer a more structural, landscape-oriented perspective on the changing environment. Critics and contemporary observers received the work as a significant contribution to the study of urban evolution and sociopolitical change. By focusing on the intersections of personal space and public architecture, Leist provides a meditative look at how the environment reflects the shifting values and aspirations of a society undergoing a monumental process of reconciliation.
