Antoine Watteau à Valenciennes

Published in 1984 by Les Archives, this volume serves as a scholarly exploration of the early life and formative years of Jean-Antoine Watteau, the celebrated 18th-century French painter. The book was conceived during a period of renewed academic interest in the artistic heritage of Valenciennes, Watteau’s birthplace, aiming to contextualize his transition from a provincial background to the sophisticated courts of Paris.

The publication curates a selection of drawings and sketches attributed to the artist, intended to illustrate his development of the fête galante style. By focusing on his roots, the editors sought to bridge the gap between his Flemish artistic ancestry and the distinct Rococo aesthetic for which he later became synonymous. Upon its release, it was well-received by art historians for its dedicated focus on a specific, often overshadowed, period of the painter’s career.
