Where it came from
Published by Actes Sud, this monograph serves as a seminal documentation of Béatrice Helg’s transition into her mature photographic style during the mid-1980s. Helg, a Swiss artist known for her meticulously constructed sets and interest in the interplay of light, shadow, and architectural form, began to gain critical international recognition during this period for her ability to transform sparse, physical materials into evocative, almost surrealist landscapes.
The volume captures the essence of Helg’s pursuit of 'photographic space,' where the medium is used not merely to document reality, but to invent it. By utilizing light as a sculptural element, she created works that balanced geometric precision with emotional depth. The publication was well-received within the European art photography circuit of the 1980s, establishing her reputation as a singular voice who bridged the gap between abstract painting and traditional darkroom technique.
