Where it came from
Bernd and Hilla Becher were conceptual artists known for their systematic photographic documentation of industrial structures across Europe and North America. This volume, published by Schirmer Art Books in 1974, serves as a seminal catalogue of their rigorous, objective approach to recording cooling towers, blast furnaces, and water towers. The collection reflects the couple's commitment to 'typology,' a method of presenting related structures in grids to highlight formal differences and similarities within industrial architecture.
The design of the book prioritizes clarity and neutrality, mirroring the artists' refusal to impose a narrative or emotional interpretation on their subjects. By isolating these utilitarian buildings against featureless skies, the Bechers invited viewers to appreciate the architectural variety and historical evolution of industrial design. Upon its release, the work was pivotal in bridging the gap between documentary photography and conceptual art, influencing generations of artists and establishing the Bechers as foundational figures in modern photography.
