Best of Matt

Published in 1991, Best of Matt serves as a curated anthology of the work of Matthew Pritchett, the prolific cartoonist known professionally as 'Matt.' His illustrations have been a cornerstone of The Daily Telegraph since 1988, where he established a unique reputation for distilling complex political news and mundane British social observations into single-panel visual gags. This volume captures the early period of his career, showcasing the minimalist, sharp-witted style that would eventually lead to his appointment as an MBE for services to newspaper journalism.

The design of the collection centers on Pritchett's signature sparse aesthetic, which prioritizes clean lines and immediate legibility. In an era dominated by more elaborate editorial cartoons, his work stood out for its restrained approach, focusing on the absurdity of daily life rather than harsh caricature. The book was produced to reach the growing audience of commuters and newspaper readers who had come to view his daily strip as an essential piece of British cultural commentary, cementing his role as a chronicler of the national psyche.
