Blind Corner. A Chandos Book

Published in 1929, Blind Corner was the first of the Jonathan Mansel novels by Dornford Yates, a pseudonym for Cecil William Mercer. Following the success of his earlier 'Berry' books, which centered on domestic humor, Yates pivoted toward the thriller genre. This shift reflected the interwar public's appetite for tales of high-stakes adventure, espionage, and aristocratic derring-do set against the backdrop of a changing Europe.

The novel established the archetype of the gentleman adventurer, emphasizing polished prose and a distinctively stiff-upper-lip code of conduct. The Chandos series, named after the house where the protagonists eventually settle, became one of Yates's most enduring contributions to early twentieth-century popular fiction. While contemporary critics noted the occasionally reactionary tone of his narratives, his meticulous attention to setting and atmosphere earned him a dedicated readership that persisted long after the genre evolved toward the grittier realism of the mid-century.
