Brand-new human being

Brand-new human being was published in 2012 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as the debut novel of Emily Jeanne Miller. Emerging from the author's background in the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the narrative centers on a family struggling with grief and the complexities of human connection following a tragic loss, set against the backdrop of a remote island. Miller crafted the story to explore the delicate, often erratic process of emotional recovery.

The book’s design and tone reflect the literary fiction trends of the early 2010s, favoring introspective character studies and nuanced domestic drama. Upon its release, the novel was generally well-received by literary critics, who praised Miller’s ability to handle heavy thematic material with a grounded and empathetic prose style. It is recognized as a quiet, thoughtful entry into the canon of contemporary American fiction.
