Brooding Billionaire, Impoverished Princess

Brooding Billionaire, Impoverished Princess was published in 2010 by Harlequin, a company synonymous with the romance genre. Written by veteran New Zealand author Robyn Donald, the book fits squarely into the traditional Mills & Boon Modern or Harlequin Presents tradition, which is characterized by high-stakes emotional drama, opulent settings, and the complex, often turbulent relationships between wealthy, powerful men and independent but vulnerable women.

The design and narrative structure reflect the conventions of mid-2000s category romance, a genre that has faced both significant commercial success and critical dismissal over the decades. Like many of Donald’s works, the novel focuses on the tension inherent in the 'power imbalance' trope, exploring themes of duty, past trauma, and reconciliation. Within the publishing landscape of the time, such titles were staples of supermarket and bookstore spinner racks, serving as accessible, escapist fiction for a loyal global readership.
