Brothers, Blue and Gray

Brothers, Blue and Gray is a work of historical fiction authored by Ellen Gray Massey, an educator and folklorist known for documenting the cultural heritage of the Missouri Ozarks. Published in 2007 by Goldminds Publishing, the book explores the domestic tensions of the American Civil War, specifically focusing on the divisions that split families and communities within border states. Massey utilized her deep regional knowledge to craft a narrative that emphasizes the human cost of the conflict beyond the battlefield.

The design and narrative structure of the book reflect Massey’s career-long interest in oral history and regional realism. In this work, she aimed to provide a grounded, accessible perspective on the war's impact on civilian life, drawing upon the research methods she honed throughout her time as a writer and academic. The reception of the book has been characterized as a niche contribution to regional literature, favored by those interested in the social history of the Ozark region and historical accounts that prioritize local, character-driven storytelling over grand military strategy.
