Bruce Coville's book of spine tinglers

Published in 1996, Bruce Coville's Book of Spine Tinglers emerged during a period of peak interest in middle-grade horror anthologies, following the immense popularity of series like R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps. Coville, already well-regarded for his imaginative science fiction and fantasy, curated this collection to offer young readers a bridge between classic spooky literature and contemporary, punchy short fiction. The volume was designed to be accessible to a wide age range, utilizing a mix of established authors and Coville’s own storytelling to maintain a consistent tone of eerie, atmospheric tension without crossing into excessive graphic content.

The publication by Sagebrush Education Resources highlights the book's long-standing presence in school and library circuits, where it served as a staple for classroom reading lists and scholastic book fairs. The collection’s design emphasized its role as an entry point for younger readers into the horror genre, often featuring evocative cover art intended to draw in browsers. Over the decades, it has been received as a foundational anthology for adolescent genre enthusiasts, noted for its ability to introduce children to various styles of supernatural mystery while maintaining the comfort of a curated, safe reading experience.
