Provenance

Where it came from

This work originates from Ursula Schulz-Dornburg’s photographic expeditions to Sulawesi, Indonesia, in the early 1980s. The project documents the vernacular architecture of the Bugis people, specifically focusing on the traditional stilt houses constructed without nails. Commissioned initially for a specific survey of architectural forms, the collection reflects the artist's methodical approach to documenting structures that exist in a delicate balance with their environment.

The 2021 publication by Mackaware brings these historical negatives to light, contextualizing them as both a sociological archive and a study in minimalism. Schulz-Dornburg sought to capture the rhythmic, repetitive geometry of the houses against the landscape, emphasizing structural authenticity over ethnographic romanticism. The collection has been received by critics as a poignant meditation on impermanence and the evolution of human shelter.
