Bulsa Sunsuelima

Bulsa Sunsuelima represents a significant contribution to the field of Africanist ethnology, compiled by the German scholar Rüdiger Schott. Published in 1996, the work serves as a comprehensive collection of folktales, myths, and oral traditions gathered from the Bulsa people of Northern Ghana. Schott dedicated much of his career to documenting the intellectual life of the Bulsa, viewing these narratives not merely as entertainment, but as vital repositories of historical consciousness and social moral values.

The design and presentation of this volume reflect the academic rigor characteristic of Schott’s research, which was deeply rooted in his long-term field studies conducted primarily between the 1960s and 1980s. By transcribing and translating these oral performances, Schott aimed to provide a bridge between Bulsa cosmology and Western scholarship. The work was received by the anthropological community as a primary source for understanding the linguistic and narrative structures of the West African savanna, preserving cultural heritage that was increasingly subject to the pressures of modernization.
