Burmese supernaturalism

Burmese Supernaturalism, first published in 1967, emerged from Melford E. Spiro’s extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Upper Burma during the early 1960s. The work was written during a period when anthropologists were increasingly interested in the intersection of religious belief systems and psychological motivations, and it sought to map the complex relationship between official Buddhist doctrine and the pervasive practices of spirit worship known as nat cults.

The text is widely recognized as a foundational study in the psychological anthropology of religion. Spiro utilized a structural-functionalist lens to explain how these supernatural beliefs served the emotional and social needs of the Burmese people. While its methodology sparked academic debate regarding the universality of psychoanalytic interpretations in non-Western contexts, the book remains a core reference for scholars of Southeast Asian cultures and the history of religious anthropology.
