Where it came from
Published in 1967 by Cambridge University Press, Carmen Christi represents a pivotal moment in twentieth-century New Testament scholarship. Written by Ralph P. Martin, the volume provides an exhaustive exegetical study of the Christ hymn found in Philippians 2:5-11. It emerged during a period of intense academic focus on early Christian liturgical poetry, serving as a landmark resource for students and theologians attempting to decipher the origins and theological implications of the hymn's structure.
Martin designed the work to synthesize the disparate critical views surrounding the passage, moving beyond simple linguistic analysis to explore the hymn's role in the early church's kerygma. The text was meticulously crafted to function as both a comprehensive reference and a scholarly argument, grounding its interpretations in both historical context and theological tradition. It was received as a standard academic contribution, noted for its rigorous engagement with the primary sources and its enduring influence on Pauline studies.
