Cartoon Art of Mike Deodato Jr

Released in 2014 by Active Media Publishing, this collection serves as a retrospective on the whimsical and stylistic range of Mike Deodato Jr. While the Brazilian artist is most widely recognized for his dark, cinematic realism in mainstream American superhero comics, this volume focuses on his broader portfolio, highlighting his technical dexterity outside of the traditional house style. It documents a shift in his artistic journey, showcasing how his early caricature and cartooning influences continued to inform his approach to anatomy and composition throughout his career.

The book acts as a curated portfolio intended to demonstrate the versatility of an artist who had already spent decades as a staple at major publishers like Marvel and DC. By compiling these specific artistic explorations, the collection offers insight into the lighter, more experimental side of Deodato’s draftsmanship. It was received as a valuable reference for fans of his work who were interested in the evolution of his visual language and the humorous, expressive techniques he developed beyond the gritty panels of his professional editorial assignments.
