Caught in Crystal

Caught in Crystal was published in 1987 as the third installment in the Lyra series, a sequence of high fantasy novels by Patricia C. Wrede. It functions as a sequel to Shadow Magic, further exploring the intricate world of Lyra, a realm defined by its distinct magical landscape and the political tensions between its various kingdoms. The book reflects the era's growing interest in character-driven fantasy, moving away from purely epic structures to focus on the personal development and internal conflicts of its protagonists, specifically Kay and her mentor, Morwen.

The design and tone of the original Ace Fantasy release align with the 1980s aesthetic of mass-market paperback fantasy, intended to appeal to both younger readers and adults seeking accessible, world-building-heavy narratives. Wrede is credited with creating a world that manages to be both whimsical and grounded, and this volume was generally well-received by fans of the series for deepening the lore of the Lyra universe. It stands as a significant bridge in the series, helping to solidify Wrede's reputation as a thoughtful architect of secondary-world fantasy.
