Charlie Kray doing the business

Published in 2000 by Blake Publishing, 'Doing the Business' serves as a memoir by Charles Kray, the eldest brother of the notorious Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie. The book was written toward the end of Charles's life, intended to provide his personal account of growing up in London's East End and his involvement with his brothers' criminal activities. It acts as a retrospective narrative designed to clarify his perspective on the family legacy and the notoriety that defined their lives throughout the 1960s.

The book is characteristic of the true-crime genre popular in Britain at the turn of the millennium, which saw a surge of interest in the Kray mythos. While written in a colloquial, conversational tone typical of autobiographical crime accounts, the work is largely viewed by historians as an attempt to recount events from the viewpoint of the sibling who largely remained in the shadow of his famous brothers. It was received as a candid, if subjective, piece of London underworld history that contributes to the ongoing cultural fascination with the East End's mid-century criminal era.
