Codenames [game]

Codenames was designed by Vlaada Chvátil and published by Czech Games Edition in 2015. Conceived as a social word game that balances depth with accessibility, the project emerged from Chvátil's desire to create a title that could be easily played by large, non-gamer groups while retaining the intellectual challenge of a deduction game. It quickly rose to prominence as a staple in modern board gaming, noted for its clever use of word association and team dynamics.

The aesthetic and graphic design of the game were crafted to be functional and minimalist, focusing on clarity during play to allow the linguistic puzzles to take center stage. Upon its release, it received widespread critical acclaim, including winning the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in 2016. Its design is widely credited with helping to catalyze the party-game renaissance of the late 2010s, maintaining a consistent presence in game shops and households worldwide.
