Where it came from
The Cy Coleman Anthology, published by Hal Leonard in 2009, serves as a comprehensive retrospective of the composer's distinguished career in musical theater and jazz. Coleman, a prolific songwriter who helped define the Broadway sound from the 1960s through the 1990s, created works characterized by sophisticated harmonic structures and a distinct rhythmic vitality. This collection was curated to gather his most enduring compositions into a single volume, providing performers and scholars with definitive arrangements that capture the nuance of his original theatrical scores.
The design of the anthology reflects the standard practices of Hal Leonard Corporation, focusing on utilitarian clarity and accessibility for musicians. By compiling iconic songs from acclaimed productions like Sweet Charity, Barnum, and City of Angels, the book functions as a pedagogical tool and a historical archive. The anthology was received as a significant contribution to the American songbook, offering a structured look at the technical and melodic complexity that made Coleman one of the most respected figures in modern musical theater history.
